How can I get my document onto one page?

You can set up templates that have your prefered alternative margin widths and text sizes. The mortgage editor shows you the text and formatting that is included in the body of your document.

In residential real estate practice, efficiency depends on accurately populated precedent documents. Occasionally, you may need a document—such as a short retainer or a direction to pay—to fit strictly on one page. Prolegis allows you to customize Document Set Up to adjust margins, font sizes, and spacing to achieve this.

Step 1: Create a Specialized "Single Page" Style

To avoid changing your firm’s global default, start by creating a new style specifically for condensed documents.

  1. Navigate to Firm > Settings > Document Set Up.

  2. Find your current "Default" style and click the Copy button (click the down arrow next to the "Edit" button).

  3. Click on the newly created duplicate to rename it (e.g., "Single Page - 0.4 Inch Margins")

Step 2: Adjust Layout for Maximum Space

To get more text on a single page, you must minimize the "dead space" in the header and footer.

  1. Header Height: In the Header section, click Design. Enter a smaller value for Header height in inches to shift the body text upward.
  2. Margin Between Header and Body: Insert a negative number in this field to further decrease the gap between your letterhead and the start of your letter.
  3. Font Settings: Select the Header, Body, or Footer tab and reduce the Size field (e.g., from 12pt to 10pt).

Step 3: Modify Page Margins

Standard legal documents often have wide margins. Reducing these is the most effective way to fit more content.

  1. Navigate to the Page (Body) tab within your new style.

  2. Locate the Left margin (in) and Right margin (in) fields.

  3. Enter a smaller decimal value (e.g., 0.5 or 0.75) to widen the text area.

  4. Click Save at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4: Apply the Style to Your Document

Once your style is configured, you must tell the specific matter to use it.

  1. Go to the Documents Action within your matter.

  2. Create your document or click Modify on an existing draft.

  3. In the document editor, click Select Style or Override Default Style.

  4. Choose your "Single Page" style from the dropdown menu.

  5. Click Preview to verify that the content now fits on a single page before saving as a PDF.

  1. Single Line Breaks: To save space between lines, hold Shift + Return on your keyboard instead of just pressing Return.
